STARBOARD STAFF

ADMINISTRATION

Jennie Stahler, Founder/Director of Development

Jennie Stahler was born and raised in western Pennsylvania in a fun-loving home with her parents and five siblings. In 2004, she graduated from Allegheny College with a B.A. degree in Managerial Economics and worked in the real estate and residential building industry. After marrying her husband, Kevin, they opted to relocate to North Carolina in 2009, looking for warmer weather. Although they love to go back to visit and will always be die-hard Pittsburgh sports fans, North Carolina quickly became home.

Jennie and Kevin have three, sweet girls, Claire, Elliette, and Rory. It was because of them and the desire to ensure that their foundation was built on Christ's love that the vision of Starboard was born.

Jennie lives with her family in Denver, NC and attends the Church at Denver. In her free time, Jennie enjoys spending time with her family, being outdoors, puzzles, sewing, and DIY projects.

"In their hearts, humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps." Proverbs 16:9

Abby Keener, Founder/Director of Operations

Abby Keener is a mother, wife, and animal lover.  Born and raised in Marietta, GA  she then ventured to Clemson University where she met her husband Paul.  She obtained her B.S. Degree in Psychology from Clemson in 2007.  Since then, she has been involved with training service dogs for individuals with disabilities, becoming a preschool teacher, and raising her children.  Abby and her family are members at Denver United Methodist Church.

She was drawn to the University-Model® type of education as it offers focused intentional time to talk with our children about Christ while also equipping them with solid education.

After getting married in 2008 to her Marine Corps husband, she made the move to Havelock, NC and taught 3rd grade there for a little over a year before she welcomed her first child.

Both she and her husband Matt see their number one role as parents is to help their children develop an eternal relationship with their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Mrs. Black received her Elementary Education degree (minor in Children's Literature) in May of 2022. Her student teaching was completed at Pumpkin Center Intermediate School in a fourth-grade class. After attending a mission trip to Honduras during her freshmen year of high school, Mrs. Black knew she wanted to become a teacher.

Her family enjoys playing any kind of board game or card game. They love to go to the drive-in movie theater in Kings Mountain or build forts in their home and watch movies as a family.

Mrs. Black is so excited to get into the classroom this year and be in an environment that puts The Gospel first as well as parent - student relationships. Mrs. Black is encouraged by the conversations she’s had with people in the community about Starboard. Mrs. Black is grateful for the opportunity to get to know the parents and students well. She wants to leave you with this Bible verse she uses often to reflect on.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.”

She met her husband at a one-year-old’s birthday party and they were soon engaged and married a year later. Once married, they lived in Charlotte, where she taught for nine years. When their daughter was finishing Kindergarten, they moved to Denver and Mrs. King began teaching at East Lincoln Middle School. The gift of adoption blessed them with a second daughter in 2003. After teaching in the same classroom for 21 years, with teammates who became like family, Mrs. King decided it was time to retire. She has tutored several students this summer while waiting to see what doors God would open.

Over the last couple of weeks, He has flung the doors of Starboard open wide and she is excited to see how He will use her here.

The Kings worship and serve with the Lake Norman Church of Christ in Huntersville. She is active in youth and ladies’ events, teaches Sunday school, and volunteers each summer at Carolina Bible Camp. She loves hiking and enjoying a good book on her front porch. However, her favorite place in the world is Sunset Beach, North Carolina.

Two of her favorite Bible passages are Philippians 4: 6-8 and Micah 6:8. “...do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.”
